ABOUT Sally
Sally began her study of piano at an early age and from the start she was drawn to composition.
She undertook a focused study of the subject while earning her degree in music composition at Stanford University. Following her graduation, she continued her work in composition by studying with Dan Locklair and Leo Smit. During this time, Sally began a lifelong collaboration with the poet Keller Cushing Freeman. The result has been the creation of 6 song cycles, most recently “Heloise and Abelard.” In addition to writing for featured vocalists, Sally has composed works for piano and for choral and chamber groups.
Her compositions have been performed at Piccolo Spoleto, the American Women Composers Festival, and in university and other venues in the Southeast. She is a founding member of the Emrys Foundation which has supported the endeavors of women composers and artists for four decades.
